Charlotte is a major city and commercial hub in North Carolina, and the state’s most populous city. It is the county seat of Mecklenburg County, and is nicknamed “The Queen City”, in honor of German princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. It is also known as “The Hornet’s Nest”, derived from the American Revolutionary War, when the British Commander General Charles Cornwallis, was driven out by hostile residents. He wrote that Charlotte “was a hornet’s nest of rebellion.” Today, residents are referred to as “Charlotteans”.
